Abstract
India is poised to lead the developing world in achieving global resilience to climate change. Ahead of COP 27 (Conference of the Parties) in Egypt, the GoI has ratified Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) as a formal statement describing its climate change action plan. Hydrogen is considered one of the most prominent energy options and has a rationale in low-carbon energy systems. It has the highest energy content by weight as compared to other fossil fuel sources. The Honorable Prime Minister announced the National Hydrogen Mission (NHM) during the 74th Independence Day speech in 2021. The current study explores the life cycle analysis of different hydrogen production pathways, viz., gray, blue, green, and Turquoise hydrogen, for India by using the open source platform MARIO developed by the SESAM research group from Politecnico di Milano. The functional unit for the study is tonnes of carbon dioxide emitted per tonne of hydrogen production.
